KASHABOWIE LAKE
TECHNIQUES Kashabowie Lake is located about 60 miles northwest of Thunder Bay. There is a public launch but camping is not allowed at the launch. SPRING: The water in the lake is usually high at this time. Jigging with minnows 4-6 inches in length will produce some hefty walleye. The color of the jig does not seem to matter as I caught fish on all colors. Please, if you notice the fish spraying milt or dropping some eggs, release them as they haven't completed spawning yet. Trolling spoons and Rapalas also work at this time of year. SUMMER: The walleye in this lake have now moved to their summer haunts. Some of them like the weeds, sandy points and rocky shoals. For the walleye in the weeds I use a slip bobber with a leech or a minnow. This method seems to reduce the number of hang-ups in the weeds. For the sand and rock walleye, I like to jig for them. Brighter colors in the summer seem to produce more walleye. I tip the jig with a minnow or a plastic grub depending how aggressive they are. Trolling minnow imitation baits along the breaks works well also. FALL: The bigger walleye are on the move and will take pretty much anything you offer them. The trick here is to find them! I find them where ever there is quick access to deep water. This means they can be suspended five feet down over fifty feet of water! They can also be in shallow water with a quick drop off to 30 feet of water. This is the time of year to explore this lake and have fun! WINTER: First I should take a momment and say, "STAY OUT OF THE NARROWS AND NEAR THE DAM". The ice here never seems to get thick enough to support you. The bays and wider areas seem to be ok. Check the ice first! I use tip-ups baited with a minnow. I also use a short jigging rod. I use a soft colored jig tipped with a minnow. I drill a lot of holes to cover as much area as possible. Remember, up here only two lines per person.
