Little Trout Bay (Lake Superior)
Little Trout Bay is a fisherman's heaven. There are many species of fish in this "little" bay. The most sought after fish here are salmon, lake trout and steelhead. There are also pike, whitefish, walleye, perch and small mouth bass.
Spring. The lake trout fishing heats up this time of year as they are near the surface and/or in shallow water. Long line trolling is most effective. Using spoons or minnow imitators will produce lot's of fairly decent sized lake trout. In the back end of the bay it is a flat marshy area. Great for northern fishing. These fish will attack nearly anything that moves. Steelhead (if you hit it right) can be found cruising the shore line. Most of these fish will be near or in the small creeks and rivers that flow into Lake Superior.
Summer. The lakers have moved into deeper water along with the steelhead and white fish. Using down riggers or divers you should be able to connect with lake trout using the same lures as in the spring. Sometimes a coaster (brook trout) will hit your lure. The white fish can be caught jigging with small spoons or jigs. Pike have moved out to a little deeper water but the aren't far from where you found them in the spring.
Fall. Lake trout are near the shallows again. Steelhead, brook trout, pike and walleye will be cruising the rocky shorelines. Casting spoons from shore will produce a variety of fish. Live bait fishing is also productive at this time. A slip float and a 6 inch minnow are pretty much all it takes to hook into a fish this time of year.
Winter. This area is a very popular ice fishing area. Whitefish and lake trout are the most searched for specie this time of year. A fifty yard walk out from the public boat launch is as far as you have to go to connect with fish. Small jigging spoons appear to work best here. Jigging within four-five feet of the bottom produces nice catches of white fish and/or lake trout. Please check ice conditions before you head out onto this body of water. It is not uncommon to watch large chunks of ice break off and flow out into the main lake.
