Sometimes it Pays Off to Help Someone. I started off my morning driving narrowly missing a fine eight point buck that ran out in front of my truck. I mean it was really close. Noticed I said 'eight point'. This was in the dark. My head lights lit him up! I met Iceman very early in the morning on Sunday Jan. 9th, 2005. I knew I was a little early by the way my knock on the door wasn't answered until ten minutes later......by his wife. We'll let this part of the story drop off into oblivion where it belongs..... Iceman got up and I handed him his coffee that I bought him and I chatted with his wife while he got his morning business over with. We loaded the truck and set off to fuel up. Once topped off we headed down the highway to Larry's Baits in Kakabeka. As I seem to be able to keep minnows alive for ever, I had minnows from October 12 that were still kicking, we only needed a dozen mediums. Nearing Shabaqua we saw two moose standing in a clearing to our right, never thought of grabbing my camera. Once through the small town we passed the Atikokan turn off and headed North to Lac Des Mille Lacs. We saw one more massive moose just before Gary's Esso. We were planning to fish off of Pine Point but just as we got to Open Bay Lodge turn off there was a truck that got stuck on the side of the road. Up here in North Western Ontario graders and plow trucks tend to over plow the roads and once a wheel gets caught, you are pretty much done for. We stopped and asked if he needed help but neither of us has a chain or rope. This is about the time I met Mike Vander Hooft and his wife Sherrill. People say that women work twice as hard as men. What a crock! Men do! Women just do it right the first time! This proved correct after we followed Sherrill's directions and the truck that was stuck was on his way. Iceman and I chatted with Mike and Sherrill and found out that Open Bay Lodge is open year round so Iceman and myself decided to fish Open Bay. Mike and Sherrill were very helpful and put us on fish that day. Even though it was slow, we did manage five walleye. All were released. Mike and Sherrill even came out and did some fishing not far from us. I will say that I will be fishing out of Open Bay Lodge very soon. Mike has built two brand new ice huts and are available for occupation! Open Bay Ice Huts sleep four, are propane heated and have complete cooking equipment. Open Bay Ice huts are available for day, night and weekly rentals. Mike Vander Hooft standing inside of one of his Ice Huts. Open Bay Lodge also allows you access to Lac des Mille Lacs. It surprised me that it was only five dollars to park your truck! If you would like to contact Open bay Lodge you may call them at this number, (807) 968-1989 or email them at vanderhoofts@sympatico.ca Once again, Mike and Sherrill, thank you for your helpfulness not only to myself and Iceman but to the people you keep on |
