MacIntyre or ScrapIntyre?
I drove my kids into town this morning for a birthday party and my wife said "I'll take the kids if you would like to go fishing down to the MacIntyre". Wow I thought. And all my gear is 30-40 minutes out of town!!! I had my digital camera on me so I thought, since I quit smoking, 12 weeks, 2 days, 16 hours and so many seconds ago, a walk would be in order. So I drove down to the river and parked on the east side of the river adjacent to the golf course. I thought to myself, "Is the run over???? There's nobody here!" I followed the first little bit of the paved path that would lead me right to the University if I allowed it but there was a beaten hard packed trail leading to my left. That would be a little more fun I thought. It didn't take me long to reach the river. I immediately took notice of clearness of the water and BAM!!! Me with out my fly rod and there's a steelhead right in front of me. I tried to focus in with my camera but there was no way that the picture would include a steelhead motionless in the water. The sun was just right. I started to move along the path when I noticed the droppings of the most focused and stubborn mammal that is at the top of the food chain!!! The Steelheader. What was left behind was a nice little package of hand snelled Gamagatsu #6 egg hooks. All 15 of them. Well now I have the business end of the tackle! Now I notice the real mess. Coffee cups, plastic pop bottles, plastic bags and things that are just to gross to menti......ok used condoms!! (these, I know, were not left behind by a steelheader, waders take to long to get in and out of)
I saw some empty plastic bags and I always have rubber gloves on me because of the field of work I'm in and I started picking up garbage. I found enough plastic grocery bags to pick up the trash around the area. I was a little warm after that adventure. I made my way back to the pavement as the trail got a little wet and I just had shoes on. I made it to the higher and dryer ground and meandered back to the river. As I was strolling along I walked into a single strand of spider web. Web? Fishing Line! There must have been thirty feet of it. I coiled it up and put it in my pocket. Scanning around but what do I see? Many pieces of garbage looking back at me!!!
I piled it and stomped back to my truck. I drove back to my mother-in-laws and got some black garbage bags. My daughter also came back with me. There were also more people now! We collected a total of five bags on both sides of the river and replaced the black garbage bag hanging on the tree with a white bag. Sorry guys but the black ones were full and I filled the one that was hanging there. My point in all this is please take it back out with you. And if you are going to head out and do some fishing there just take a white plastic bag with you and fill it before you leave. If everyone just took one little bag out that whole river would be spot less in less than a week. I hope I started something here and we can all pitch in I know there's still lot's of garbage that I couldn't get at because I had my four year old daughter with me. Let's all hope for a clean river.
