Hell or High Water???

"How's the fishing?"

"Water's to high."

How many times have you heard this before? Sure fishing can be tough if you slog it out all day in the haunts that you used to catch them in last year. Some people will frequent the same places day in and day out every specific time of year. Sure this works some of the time but not always, as we can attest to.

Starting out in your favourite spot is always a great start. But what if they aren't biting? Do you pack up and try a few other spots you know before going home?

This is a great time to explore your lake at high water. Sometimes fish are not as far off as you think. The word "shallow" comes first to mind. But don't forget to fish deeper also. An influx of high water comes from rivers which were fed by streams which in turn were fed by run off. This water has had time to warm up and could drive the fish a little deeper to find their temperature comfort zone.

With high water, usually, comes low visibility. This could make you change tactics also. Try using larger and louder baits, both in sound and colour. Vertical jigging in deep water can entice a few fish into striking.

With everything late this year combined with the amount of rain could spell for some tough fishing.......well only if you aren't willing to experiment.

So next time,

"How's the fishing?"

"Good, but the water's high"

Roger Mayer.
