We were actually throwing our fishing and camping gear into the back of the truck. We couldn't move fast enough. I wear glasses and had to take them off because the black flies were bouncing from my eyeballs to the lenses of my glasses and I couldn't take it anymore. Dave, sweating, as he was bundled up in a long sleeved sweat shirt and looked like Kenny from South Park, wrestled with the boat trailer to hook it up to the truck. The "Kenny" look prompted me to scream "You bastards!!! You killed Dave!!!" as I envisioned Dave turning ghostly white from lack of blood and falling to the ground. This was combined with hot windless weather that made it worse. No matter what repellant you would use on a day like this it seemed not to work. The black flies were thirsty and nothing was stopping them. We took a break in the truck but it didn't last long as it was to hot. Both of us did what we had to do to pack up and we beat a hasty retreat.
Male Mosquito Females take blood for reproduction. The males have "fuzzy" antennae and take nectar from flowers to feed upon. I'm sure everyone has a similar story to this and we can all agree that there is no relief from the situation. Recommendations on repellants are of no use as I have not seen or heard of one that can combat flies like the hordes we saw that day. Even if you put on a great repellant the flies will still surround you just to annoy you. These pests are actually the basis of the food chain, especially for fish. Every fish feeds on them at some point of their life. So while we hate them we do owe them some respect even though we don't really want to say it out loud. But think of this. If flies are the bottom of the food chain.....and they feed on us.....what are we? Roger Mayer.
