Rivers These types of Rivers have a depth of twenty to thirty feet or more. As the water level rises and the water warms up, due to rain, the walleye will start moving to spawning areas. This would usually include areas around a dam. The rip rap along the banks and tail waters are also great spawning areas. Walleye will use other spawning locations such as; rocky areas along the banks of the river, in riffles and rapids, flooded timber, brush and marsh grass. Males may remain in the spawning areas for two weeks. The females leave to go downstream almost right away. The fish that leave will hold in the current. The current will bring food to the fish. Walleyes regain their strength after two weeks of heavy feeding. Now they will begin moving to their summer locations. Walleye will hold in areas where forage is most plentiful. Due to the current the water temperature remains constant. Walleyes will hold near current breaks in the main channel during the summer. These can include rocky points, boulders and wing dams. There are a lot of bait fish located in these areas. In the fall the walleye should still be in the same areas as they were in the summer providing there is deep water nearby. The water in a river cools evenly.
